Zo klein als het dorpje Montalcino is (5.000 inwoners), zo groot zijn de wijnen die er vandaan komen. Brunello di Montalcino is een van de meest beroemde wijnen van Italië. Hij wordt gemaakt van de Sangiovese Grosso druif. De lange verplichte rijping (minimaal 4 jaar) zorgt voor complexe en rijke wijnen.
De Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia van Canalicchio di Sopra is licht robijnrood van kleur met reflecties van granaatrood. De neus is bijzonder rijk en intens, met een waaier aan rood fruit, viooltjes en lavendel, op een achtergrond van kruiden, zoete specerijen, tabak, zoethout en drop. De smaak is rijk en complex, zeer gelaagd, met nog ruwe tannines, het fruit gedragen door zuren en een mooie mineraliteit. De finish is schier oneindig. Wat een klasbak!
De Brunello La Casaccia is een nieuwe wijn (2015 is de eerste vintage). De druiven voor deze single-vineyard Brunello komen van de La Casaccia wijngaard, vlak naast de wijnkelder Canalicchio, aan de noordkant van Montalcino. In vergelijking met zijn percelen in Montosoli, beschrijft eigenaar Francesco Ripaccioli de bodem hier als een zwaardere bruine klei met veel magnesium die meer genereuze groei geeft. De druiven worden eind september met de hand geoogst.
De vergisting van de druiven vindt plaats in roestvrijstalen vaten op een gecontroleerde temperatuur, met dagelijks overpompen van de hoed. De schillen blijven 25 dagen bij het sap voor de extractie van kleur en smaak. De wijn rijpt daarna 25 maanden in grote eikenhouten vaten (25 hectoliter) van Slavonisch eiken.

“The Canalicchio di Sopra 2015 Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia represents a new chapter in this estate's long history. This is a single-vineyard expression from the Canalicchio area, one of the most interesting subzones on the northeast side of Montalcino. Giving identity to individual parcels gives an estate like this huge potential for further expression and experimentation. The site is a little over two hectares, and it has dense, mineral-rich clay soils that add more power and a heavier center of gravity. The vines were planted in 1990. I notice slightly firmer tannin here, with a very distinct level of acidity purity. You also get lasting berry fruit favors with blueberry and dried raspberry followed by spice, licorice and lavender buds from the south of France and the rim of the Mediterranean. The wine is distinguished by endnotes of balsam or medicinal herb that grow in strength with time. It offers plenty of volume and weight. Not counting the various large format bottles made, only 3,610 750-milliliter bottles were produced.” (Monica Larner)
