Zo klein als het dorpje Montalcino is (5.000 inwoners), zo groot zijn de wijnen die er vandaan komen. Brunello di Montalcino is een van de meest beroemde wijnen van Italië. Hij wordt gemaakt van de Sangiovese Grosso druif. De lange verplichte rijping (minimaal 4 jaar) zorgt voor complexe en rijke wijnen.
De Brunello di Montalcino van Canalicchio di Sopra is mooi robijnrood van kleur met reflecties van granaatrood. De neus is een complexe waaier van aroma’s, met pruimen, rijpe zwarte kersen en wat viooltjes, op een stevige achtergrond van cederhout, salie, walnoot, pijptabak en drop. De smaak is rijk en fruitig, een vol mondgevoel, met een mooie harmonie tussen de tannines, de zuren en de alcohol. De tannines hebben een enorme lengte in de finish.
De druiven voor deze Brunello komen 60% van de Montosoli Cru wijngaarden en voor 40% van de Canalicchio Cru wijngaarden van het domein. De druiven worden eind september met de hand geoogst.
De vergisting van de druiven vindt plaats in roestvrijstalen vaten, met dagelijks overpompen van de hoed. De schillen blijven 25 dagen bij het sap voor de extractie van kleur en smaak. De wijn rijpt daarna 36 maanden in grote eikenhouten vaten (25 en 50 hectoliter) van Slavonisch eiken.
De Brunello di Montalcino is een rijke wijn en hoort dus bij rijke gerechten.

This terrific new release shows dark fruit and tart cherry, but then unwinds slowly to reveal light spice, toasted nut, blue flower and crushed limestone. The wine affords a genuine sense of place with roots in the northern half of the appellation where the light is whiter and the nights are cooler. That brilliant luminosity appears in the pure quality of fruit and the sharp focus of the mouthfeel, driven by balanced tannins and acidity. The sensation it gives is compact and long, without too much extra volume or padding. There’s an exotic citrusy tinge to its ripe black cherries, taking on hints of sage, cedar and allspice, all grounded by moist earth tones. It’s focused and remarkably pure with a noticeable inner sweetness to the red and hints of blackberry fruit, all cast across a silky, feminine frame. The structure builds like a crescendo, as minerals fade to youthful tannins. Juicy acids maintain perfect balance from start to finish, making for a surprisingly fresh expression yet with amazing length.
